My week 12 of 2019

This week also started with visits to students for their performance assessment. This week I enjoyed the lessons. Especially that of Marely Girigori. She and her sister have been model students and now different schools are begging them to come and join their team. Marely has a natural talent. Keep up the good work Marely.

I finally sat down to write my motivation for the research. Well, I know why I want to do it. Dr. Severing, dr. Verhoeven and me talked about it. So I thought this was an easy one. But it wasn’t. It took me four hours to write just a little bit. I was searching on the internet, reading, writing and finally, I had something. Now I feel and think like the students; don’t you dare tell me I have to change it. 😊

Maxy Bak – Piard is a colleague who started her Ph. D. road some time ago but experienced some setbacks along the way. Her first promotor died. Can you imagine that? Looking for another one, trying to match styles again. She survived that and more and she is still on her road to Ph. D. She has published different articles. I told her about not finding the articles that I wanted. And if I found them I had to pay like $50 for viewing the document for 24 hours. I will get bankrupt before I start.

She gave me a golden tip on how to handle and to find the literature I want. She also told me that writing your thesis while you have young children is not such a good idea. She would not have started on this road if she knew this before. This is something I considered from the start. My daughter is almost 18! If she was younger I would not have started.

Maxy, thanks for all the advice.

More table tennis this week. As I mentioned last week, this week my first 50+ tournament. There were 19 players. All men except for my mom and I. We played in 4 poules of 5. One player of my poule didn’t come. I often use the tournaments I play in, when explaining the counting of possiblities; in this case the matches. When 5 players all have to play each other there will be 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10 matches . And so on.

The best 2 of each poule advanced to the quarterfinals. I was one of them. 💃🤸‍♂️ But I didn’t reach the semi-finals. I was happy though.

      Thank you, Chantal.

A lot of times we see someone achieve something, and we want it too. We do not realize what they have done to be there. I always see people that are telling me they are on their road to Ph.D. and it is like a road going nowhere. Why is it so hard? I am a little bit curious. By writing it down is for me the only way to remember it all later.

I am happy that I am not doing it only for me. And hopefully, I write about things that can help other people out too.

    Great article!
It’s interesting to have a look into the process of your work with students and journey to attain a Phd.
