If I could use a simple sentence or something to characterize my week, it would be “No Concentration!”. I had time for some things this week but I was distracted every time I tried to do something meaningful.
For respect to my aunt and my mom, I decided not to play the tournament this week. I was feeling very confident I could win this time. The next tournament I wanted to play in the A-Class. Things happen unexpectedly and change all of your plans.
The death of my aunt makes all of us realize that we have to prepare for such a moment. Who has funeral insurance or not? We have to look for all our papers. Things to do.
I have worked a little on my proposal. One of the items is about who is going to benefit from my research. This is what I wrote:
“Nowadays decisions about education (like curriculum) are based on academic research. The time has come to change the way we educate our children for the future. In his paper about Mathematics for the 21st Century, Dr. Sanjay Mahajan (2014), explains that PISA is pushing mathematics curriculum towards competence in four contexts. The first context is finally being a personal one. As we have to live in a society, the societal context is also one of the domains. We have to work so occupational context is important and so is scientific context. Mathematics, as a reasoning tool, can provide transfer across these domains. On Curaçao, most research is about the languages Papiamentu and Dutch, but there is almost no research done on mathematics. At least no recent ones.”
“What I hope to bring about is (re)new interest in mathematics research. This research can give an answer to parents that has to choose in what language to start mathematics education for their children. Not only language variables will be taken into account but also educational factors, cognitive variables, and home numeracy environment variables. What I personally hope is that the government will use this information.to adapt the way we teach children mathematics in Curaçao .”
After the funeral of my aunt, my cousin reminded me that when we were little, he and my sister would be playing and I would tell them that they better do something to learn. My cousin said that he always had a good grade after my tutoring. I can not remember a thing.
